Macau’s VIP gambling decline revealed
VIP gambling in Macau dropped by 39.9% in Macau over the course of 2015, according to detailed figures released by the Chinese province’s regulator.
The VIP market once accounted for about 80% of gambling revenue in Macau, but at MOP127.82 billion (€14.5bn/$15.9bn) last year it contributed just 50%.
The fall is linked to and Beijing’s anti-corruption crackdown and the effects of the mainland’s economic slowdown.
The Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau also reported that gross gaming revenue from the mass market, which includes slot machines, dropped by 25.9% year-on-year to MOP103.02 billion.
The regulator reported earlier this month that total gross gaming revenue in 2015 fell by 34.3% to MOP230.84 billion, which was the deepest loss since the industry’s liberalisation in 2003.
