Portugal iGaming Dashboard – May 2018

| By Stephen Carter
Q1 saw regulated operators return €33.8m in GGR, down 7.4% on the prior period, driven by a lower return from sports betting

iGaming Business and Ficom Leisure are pleased to present the Portugal iGaming Dashboard, providing revenue, product and game metrics on the dot.pt regulated market.

The data is updated quarterly following the official release of the figures by Portuguese regulator the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ).

The first full year of the regulated market in Portugal saw dot.pt operators generate a total of €122.6m across all products, with sports betting accounting for 56% of this.

In Q1 of 2018, regulated operators returned €33.8m in GGR, down 7.4% on the prior period, driven by a lower return from sports betting, which dipped to €17.4m from €20.5m.

Sports betting is currently taxed at a prohibitive 8-16% of turnover in Portugal, with just four operators having subsequently taken licences.

Gaming, including poker, however had its most successful quarter to date, up from €16m in the final quarter of 2017 to €17.4m in Q1 of 2018.

Gaming is taxed at a more reasonable 15-30% of gross gaming revenue with this capped once annual income reaches €10m, with seven operators having obtained licences for products including slots and variants of blackjack and roulette. PokerStars remains the sole licensee for online poker.

Slots accounted for 68% of casino revenue in the regulated dot.pt market in Q1, up from 61% in 2017, French roulette falling to 19.4% from 26.23%.
