| By Robert Fletcher
British gambling industry charity GambleAware has revealed that it received £2.3m (€2.5m/$3.0m) in donations and pledges during the first half of its financial year, with William Hill pledging more than £1m.

However the operator’s £1m commitment has not yet been donated, though the charity included the sum in its fundraising total for the six months to 30 September.

Gamesys made the largest donation in period, with its first quarter contribution of £450,000 going unmatched, while Betway was the only other operator to donate more than £100,000 in the period.

Other industry donations included £50,000 from 888 Holdings; £40,000 from Microgaming owner Apricot Investments; £30,000 from Videoslots and £25,000 from Inspired Gaming Group.

Petfre Gibraltar, the igaming subsidiary of BetFred, made separate donations of £35,057 and £26,783, while Casumo also committed to two donations of £27,446 and £16,170.

In terms of pledges entertainment arcade operator Praesepe Holdings said it would hand over a total of £85,500 to the charity, and proceeded to donate £28,000 of this in the first half.

GambleAware requests all business that profit from gambling in Great Britain to donate at least 0.1% of their annual gross gambling yield (GGY) directly to the charity.

During the 2019-20 fiscal year ending 31 March, GambleAware received £10.1m in funding from 956 entities that profit from gambling, with GVC making the largest donation of the year, committing a total of £1.46m.

Earlier this week, GambleAware released an invitation to tender for a partner to support the design and creation of a new nationwide network of people with lived experience of gambling harms in Great Britain.

The network is expected to cost between £70,000 and £90,000, and take 18 months to set up.
