Australian operator Star Entertainment Group is to introduce a number of new restrictions at its Star Sydney casino, in response to the New South Wales government’s efforts to halt a potential second wave of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in the country.

Star reopened the casino on 1 June after being closed since 23 March, in line with NSW government measures related to slowing the spread of Covid-19.

Visitation was initially restricted to casino loyalty club members and their guests by invitation, but this was later increased to 900 invitation-only guests at any one time on 19 June.

Further relaxation of restrictions by the NSW government from 1 July meant Star was able to increase capacity to up to 5,000 patrons at any one time, with loyalty club members and the general public permitted to enter the casino.

However, in response to rising concerns about a second wave of Covid-19, the NSW has issued a new order, which amends Covid-19 related restrictions that apply to hospitality venues.

Star Sydney will now be subject to a maximum of 300 patrons at one time, while adhering to the requirement for a minimum of four square metres per patron to ensure social distancing. Customers gathering in different areas will also not be able to mingle.

As a result of the latest restrictions, Star Sydney said it will focus on prioritising visitation by its highest value patrons. The casino also committed to adjusting staffing levels to reflect the new operating environment.

Earlier this month, Stars also reopened the main gaming floors and private gaming rooms at both its Star Gold Coast and Treasury Brisbane, after the Queensland government eased certain Covid-19 restrictions.
