Betting again boosts Danish market
Denmark’s betting and online casino market grew by around 30% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2016.
In figures released by the national regulator, Spillemyndigheden, the country’s licensed operators brought in gross gaming revenue (GGR) of DK975 million (€131.1 million/$146.0 million) in the three months through to March 31, compared to DK750 million during the same period in 2015.
The sector’s GGR was also up by more than 7% compared to Q4 of 2015.
Betting was the main driver of growth, with GGR up 33% year-on-year to DK585 million. Online betting was worth DK370 million, which is equivalent to 64% of the vertical’s total figure.
Online casino grew by 26% to DK390 million, with Spillemyndigheden noting that the sector has now expanded by more than 20% in five consecutive quarters.
A Spillemyndigheden spokesperson added: “Before 2015, the quarterly growth rate compared to the same quarter last year was usually around 10%.”
The GGR for Denmark’s seven bricks-and-mortar casinos increased by 27% year-on-year to DK95 million.
