The summer’s lack of a major sports betting event slowed the growth of Spain’s regulated online gaming market, though the popularity of online slots ensured the market posted year-on-year growth during the second quarter.

This was particularly apparent in June, when total gross gaming revenue across all verticals fell to €55.9m (£50.6m/$62.0m), the lowest monthly total since January 2019, when GGR amounted to just €45.4m.

While the Fifa Women’s World Cup kicked off that month, it did prompt an uptick in betting activity, with June’s sports betting revenue of €24.9m lower than any other month of the year. Sports betting had begun the quarter strongly, with April’s €33.5m the second highest total for the year to date.

However revenue declined into May then June, with the LaLiga title race wrapped up relatively early, and all Spanish clubs knocked out of European competition by 9 May.

Casino, supported by a high level of activity around online slots, proved more resilient, with revenue remaining above €22.7m for each month of the quarter. The vertical’s quarterly high came in June, when revenue reached €23.4m.

As a result of the decline in sports betting activity, the vertical saw its share of Spain’s regulated igaming market fall to less than 50%, accounting for 48.5% of revenue in Q2. Casino, meanwhile, accounts for 38.7% of the market total, followed by poker on 10.9%.

Looking at active player numbers, the quarter began strongly with more than 900,000 players active in April and May. However this fell sharply in June, to just 754,751. Player registrations also slid that month, falling to 181,084 new sign-ups.
