Egaming Monitor: Love, luck and the rise of sweet spins

| By Kevin Dale
Love was either on fire on Valentine’s Day, or the hooch was consumed with the pooch. Kevin Dale of Egamingmonitor reflects on the differences between love and lust, romps or romance, and aches versus toothaches.

Book Of Dead makes it back to the podium but is far from toppling the omnipresent Gates Of Olympus. The best new releases were Bigger Bass Splash (Pragmatic Play) and FRKN Bananas (Hacksaw Gaming), yet these two sit just outside our top 20 for the month.

Our prediction a few months ago that the more generous 1,000 variants of Pragmatic Play games would dominate is still alive, as they vie for spins with the originals.

Quiet but passionate launches

Unlike our bumper crops of Halloween and Christmas titles, Valentine launches were muted this year. Powder kegs are either exhausted by Christmas or being kept dry for Easter. While we don’t publish a Valentine’s chart as such, we do tip our hats to the romantically inclined studios out there.

Perhaps sadly, it was a Valentine’s “edition” that performed best on 14 February: Diamond Plus Valentine’s Edition by Amusnet Gaming.

Other top performers included the classic Halloween/Valentine crossover Immortal Romance (Microgaming) and Love Joker (Play’n GO).

Hot new releases included Burn In Love (1X2 Network) and Burning Love (Booming Games) and, while not strictly ‘editions’ as such, they both feel like makeovers of the old classics.

The title that stands out is Go High Puppy Love from RubyPlay, catering more to devoted dog lovers than those with other playful intentions. If you tend to mark the event with heart-shaped treats for your pets, then this is the slot that will hit the spot.

Industry deals and game distribution

On the deals front, Playzia has been busy signing up distribution deals with new aggregators Light & Wonder, SoftSwiss & St8, although TaDa Gaming still remains the busiest studio dealmaker over the last six months.

The aggregator EveryMatrix has added another two new providers, Barstruck and Champion Studio, keeping them ahead of the aggregation pack.

Sweet slots for spring

Looking ahead, sweet and sticky games tend to do quite well at this time of year, coinciding with both Valentine’s and, just around the corner, Easter.

No surprise then that both Sugar Rush and Sweet Bonanza, with their thousands of variants, are performing well and could make a play for Gates Of Olympus’ top spot. Chocolate Shop by EA Gaming is a good effort at bridging the urges and splurges of both seasonal events. So, in a few weeks time it should do quite bon, bon.
