Spain’s online gambling sector grows to €812m in 2018
The gambling industry in Spain produced €7.77bn (£6.57bn/$8.48bn) in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in 2018 with the online sector rising 22.5% to bring in GGR of €812.0m, according to new figures published by the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), the country’s gambling regulator.
Lotteries were the largest source of revenue, bringing in €4.21bn, up 0.9%. Lotteries from the Sociedad Estatal Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (SELAE) made up €3.14bn of this, while the Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles (ONCE) brought in €1.03bn. Some €4.13bn worth of lottery tickets were purchased online.
The land-based betting and casino sector, which did not include gaming machines or lotteries, took in €2.08bn. Casino made up €1.03bn of this total, while bingo accounted for €593.9m, up 2.8%, and retail betting contributed €455.8m.
Online gambling produced a total of €812.0m, up 22.5% on €17.82bn worth of stakes. Revenue of €365.3m was produced from online betting, leading to a total of €850.6m in betting revenue, up 13.4%, on €9.31bn worth of bets. SAMAE brought in €70.9m from online lottery sales and ONCE took in €14.6m from the same sector.
Gaming machines and terminals brought in a further €665.1m.
Earlier today, Great Britain's gambling commission published its own industry stastics, which were for the year ending 31 March 2019. Unlike in Spain, revenue for the British online sector declined.
