Lottery sales in China dropped by 3.8% in 2015, according to official figures released by the Ministry of Finance.

Total sales of tickets fell to RMB367.9 billion (€51.8 billion/$56.1 billion), with a ban on online sales and the country’s economic woes considered the two major reasons for the decline.

Welfare lottery sales decreased by 2.2% to RMB201.5 billion, while the sports lottery slipped 5.7% to RMB166.4 billion.

Despite the decline, the 2015 figure is still 18.7% above 2013’s RMB309.0 billion total.

Lottery revenues are used to cover administrative fees as well as the jackpot, and the rest to contribute towards social welfare and sports facilities.
