Canadian MP set to reintroduce single-event sports betting bill

Brian Masse, the Democratic Party MP for the Windsor West area of Canada, has announced plans to reintroduce a bill regarding wagering on single-game sports in the country.

Masse last year was criticised over the bill, with Bill Daly, deputy commissioner of the North American NHL ice hockey competition, writing to the MP to voice his criticism of Bill-C 290.

The bill, introduced around four years ago, sets out regulations to decriminalise betting on single-game sports in the country.

Canadians are currently only able to make parlay or multiple wagers via their provincial lottery providers.

Bets must be made on two or more sporting events at once, with all other forms of sports betting outlawed in Canada.

Despite having been unsuccessful with the bill so far, Masse has opted to return with Bill-C 290 in another effort to expand sports betting in the country.

Masse previously branded Canada’s refusal to allow single-event sports betting as a “windfall for organised crime”.
