The midfielder, who plays for Scottish Premiership side Rangers, is said to have gambled on Celtic’s 7-0 defeat by Spanish club Barcelona in the Uefa Champions League European competition.
Scottish Football Association (SFA) rules prohibit players, coaches, referees and coaches from wagering on football anywhere in the world.
The SFA is yet to officially comment on the matter.
Last week, Barton was suspended by his club following a training ground disagreement
