US sports betting round-up: Maryland and Kansas September
Maryland handle hits $532.9m
Focusing first on Maryland, taxable revenue during September hit $62.5m (£47.9m/€57.2m). This is 190.7% more than the same month last year and 68.0% more than August this year, but not quite a new record.
Data from Maryland Lottery and Gaming shows mobile betting accounted for $60.7m of all revenue in September. Retail sportsbooks generated the remaining $1.9m.
Handle-wise, players spent $532.9m, the fifth-highest total since wagering went live in December 2021. The total beat last year’s figure by 20.4% and is also 41.2% ahead of August. Overall spend on mobile during September was $518.9m, with retail’s handle at $14.0m.
In terms of hold, for the state as a whole, this reached 11.73%. For online, hold was 11.70% and retail 13.57%. As for tax, the state collected a record $9.4m from betting operators. Wagering operators are taxed at 15% of adjusted gross revenue (AGR).
FanDuel and partner Live! Casino retained a healthy lead in Maryland. For September, the partnership generated $32.3m in mobile revenue from $231.8m for a 13.93% hold.
DraftKings remains in second with $19.8m from $175.9m in bets, leaving an 11.26% monthly hold. BetMGM rounded off the top three with $4.3m off $39.4m for a 10.91% hold.
Maryland retail betting launched in December 2021, with mobile sports wagering starting a year later in November 2022.
Revenue reaches $18.3m in Kansas
Turning to Kansas, revenue for September amounted to $18.3m, the fifth-highest revenue month for operators since launch in September 2022. The total is 125.9% more than last year, as well as 177.3% ahead of August.
This includes $17.6m from online sports betting and $726,130 from retail sportsbooks, according to the Kansas Lottery.
As for handle, this reached $248.9m, which was not quite a new record for Kansas. The total is, however, 13.5% higher year-on-year and 69.3% more than August. Since operators launched in September 2022, the best month for handle was December 2023 when bettors wagered $259.7m.
Of September’s total, $239.8m was spent betting online, while Kansas players also wagered $9.0m at retail sportsbooks.
State-wide hold for September stood at 7.35%, with online hold 7.46% and retail 8.03%. As for tax, this reached $1.8m.
DraftKings and Boot Hill Casino retained the lead in the online market by some distance in September. The partnership drew $9.3m in revenue from $119.3m for a 7.80% hold
FanDuel, partnered with Kansas Star, was the closest challenger with revenue of $5.4m off a $69.9m handle. This resulted in a 7.73% monthly hold. BetMGM and Kansas Crossing completed the top three with $1.9m in revenue from $19.6m in bets for a 9.69% hold.
In terms of retail, the partnership between ESPN Bet Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway drew the most revenue. For September, revenue hit $440,822 off a $6.3m handle, meaning a 7.05% hold.
