North Carolina sports betting market shrinks year-on-year in April

North Carolina saw revenue climb month-on-month despite a lower spend on sports betting in April.

Sports betting revenue and handle in North Carolina both declined year-on-year during April, although the Tar Heel State was able to post month-on-month revenue growth despite lower spending.

Consumers wagered a total of $576.2 million on sports during April. Paid wagering revenue for the month amounted to $560.7 million, with promotional bets at $15.5 million.

The total fell 11.2% short of April 2024, the first full month of legal sports wagering in North Carolina. It was also 15.8% behind the $685 million bet during March 2025, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission reported.

North Carolina betting revenue drops 55.6%

The commission noted $4.1 million worth of cancelled and voided bets. In addition, players won $525.3 million from betting.

As such, gross wagering revenue for April topped $46.8 million, down 55.6% year-on-year. It was 22.8% more than in March, however, despite customers spending less during the month.

This resulted in a statewide hold of 8.12% from sports betting in April, an improvement from 5.78% in March.

Data on the performance of individual operators in North Carolina is not publicly available. FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and Fanatics are among the brands active in the state.
