AGA hands strategic role to former Washington Commanders VP Maloney
Maloney joins AGA as senior vice-president of strategic communications. He will oversee all communications, research, marketing and public affairs campaigns for the organisation.
Taking on the role from January 2024, Maloney joins AGA from the Commanders. He had served as the team’s vice-president of public affairs and strategic communications since December 2020.
Prior to this, he was a partner in public affairs business Locust Street Group. He also worked as principal for Dewey Square group and in various roles for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
In addition, Maloney was a field organiser and field director for the John Kerry for President initiative between October 2003 and December 2004.
“I’m honoured to join the AGA and its dedicated team at this pivotal moment for the gaming industry,” Maloney said. “The future holds great promise. I’m energised by the opportunity and challenge of communicating the remarkable benefits and economic impact of legal gaming across the country.”
AGA president and CEO Bill Miller added:“I’m thrilled to have Joe join the AGA and lead our best-in-class communications team. Joe is an accomplished professional who has taken on significant public affairs challenges throughout his career.
“We will benefit not only from his depth of experience and his tireless advocacy, but his enthusiasm and energy to hit the ground running as a champion for the casino gaming industry.”
US gambling revenue set for record year
The appointment comes after AGA last month said that US commercial gambling remains on course for a record year. This followed $16.17bn (£12.82bn/€14.99bn) being generated in revenue during Q3.
Revenue in the three months to 30 September was up 6.1% year-on-year. It was also the 11th straight quarter of annual revenue growth and the best third quarter on record.
Combined traditional slot machine and table game revenue reached $12.49bn, up 1.8%. Meanwhile, igaming grossed $1.52bn, up 26% year-on-year.
Elsewhere, combined in-person and online sports betting also recorded a strong quarter. Revenue was up 22.8% to $2.15bn.
Revenue growth in total land-based gaming accelerated from 0.9% in the previous quarter to 1.5% in Q3, reaching a total of $12.61bn.
