How Playradar’s hybrid content redefines the online casino experience

| By Edo Haitin, Sportradar | Reading Time: 4 minutes
As operators continue searching for ways to bridge the gap between sports betting and casino gaming, Playradar is introducing a new category of hybrid content designed to bring the two worlds together. Edo Haitin, executive vice-president iGaming at Sportradar, explains why the timing is right.

The iGaming industry has always possessed a brilliant ability to adapt. It spends millions every year developing innovative new products and funding creative marketing campaigns, ensuring it meets player demands and remains compliant. However, one obstacle has always proven difficult to overcome: converting sports bettors into casino players, and vice versa.

Operators and studios alike have spent years scratching their heads attempting to solve this problem. Whether it’s through sports-themed slots and table games or through promotions tied to major sports events, it has never quite managed to get it right. The two groups, casino players and sports bettors, remain, at least in the eyes of many operators, separate.

A new approach

At Playradar, Sportradar’s newly established iGaming brand, we are taking a different approach. Rather than treating these players as different entities and trying to work out how to nudge them from one vertical to the other, we have built an entirely new vertical designed to bring the two together.

This new form of hybrid content is what we are calling sports casino entertainment. It takes archived and live sports footage and data and gamifies it using familiar gameplay and betting mechanics. This allows players not just to watch sports but to interact with them in ways that traditional casino or sports betting content has never allowed.

What really sets casino sports entertainment aside is the gameplay itself and the use of real historical sports data and footage in place of traditional RNGs to determine outcomes. Through Sportradar, we have access to 25 years’ worth of historical data along with thousands of hours of archived footage from sports and leagues worldwide, a powerful combination which gives us the opportunity to create unique games.

“Recreating the sense of watching along and betting with your friends is something existing products have struggled to capture”

With our products, we aim to create a connection that standard casino games simply cannot achieve. Players can engage with real teams and leagues while enjoying the mechanics of a casino game, for example choosing where a golf shot will land on a certain hole of a famous course, reliving a fantastic shot from a NBA game they remember or experiencing cricket scoring on a roulette game.

Strengthening this player connection is the idea of community. Over the last few years, iGaming has seen an increased demand for social experiences across all verticals. Players no longer want to play games alone. They want to engage with one another and share their experiences.

Through our live chat features, players are encouraged to talk and share, building a sense of community and a welcoming environment. Our hybrid content is not exclusively about gambling; we want our players to be able to relax and enjoy themselves, with no pressure to play huge bets or make impulsive decisions.

Crucially, we don’t just want our games to be a passive experience. Recreating the sense of watching along and betting with your friends is something existing products have struggled to capture, and we believe casino sports entertainment can succeed where others have failed.

Perfect timing

Several trends across iGaming and sports betting in recent years also suggest the market is ready for exactly this kind of product. The rise of crash gaming shows strong demand for fast-paced, interactive formats. On the sports betting side, micro-betting’s rapid growth has demonstrated a similar appetite for in-play wagering that delivers quick results. In many ways, sports casino entertainment is the natural next step for players.

The cross-selling potential this creates is important as well. The industry has long treated sports betting and casino as two separate systems that happen to share a wallet. With hybrid content, that imaginary barrier is instantly removed.

A sports bettor who already follows the NBA does not need to be taught how a free throw works. The jump from watching to participating is much smaller here than it is from a sportsbook to a slot machine. Equally, a casino player who is familiar with the gameplay mechanics may find themselves drawn to sports content for the first time. This natural bridge does not currently exist, and it presents a golden opportunity for operators.

Looking beyond acquisition and conversion, this approach also strengthens retention. When players feel a connection to the content, whether it’s through familiar teams or leagues or shared playing experiences, they are far more likely to stay. In such a competitive landscape, loyalty has become increasingly difficult to earn, and by providing players with content that resonates beyond a base level, you provide them with a reason to return.

An opportunity for operators

Of course, the appeal of this hybrid content extends beyond cross-selling opportunities. The use of real, verifiable sports data also helps add a new element of trust. These games offer a level of transparency that will appeal massively to players, especially those who have concerns about RNG games. The low-pressure environment and explainable outcomes will also help promote responsible gambling, something which is key to everything we want to protect at Sportradar.

Sports bettors and online casino players have been treated as totally different entities for far too long. No one has been able to solve the crossover problem because they have not had the right tools, or, quite simply, have not had access to them. At Playradar, we are perfectly positioned to do this due to the resources we have at our disposal.

The potential for casino sports entertainment to connect with players is huge. We are creating an entirely new vertical that meets players where they already are. It is taking everything sports bettors and players already know and love and combining it into an exciting package, bringing together engaging action, community, and transparency in a way that will change the game.

With the FIFA World Cup taking place this summer, the arrival of casino sports entertainment could not have come at a better time. We have four football-themed releases scheduled for the tournament, providing operators with the perfect opportunity to engage both sports bettors and casino players during one of the biggest events on the sporting calendar.
