A record return from online casino offset a weaker sportsbook performance in Italy in January, as Bet365 and Stars claimed bragging rights in betting and casino
A record return from online casino offset a weaker performance for sports betting in Italy in January, as PokerStars retained top spot as the biggest regulated casino operator. In online sports betting, Bet365 regained top spot from Planetwin365, building a 2.5% lead over its multi-channel rival, claiming 16.6% of the €60.76m generated by dot.it operators in January, the online GGR margin of 12.5% on the €485.08m wagered well behind the 27.9% margin in retail. In the more fragmented online casino market – in which the top 10 operators account for 59.5% of the total market compared to 79.1% in sports betting – PokerStars claimed 9.3% of the €59.7m generated from licensed operators in January, ahead of Sisal with 8.4% and Lottomatica’s 7.9% share. The €138.86 generated by the dot.it market in January represented a 12% dip on the December 2017 total, but 23.4% up year-on-year.
