North America’s National Basketball Association (NBA) has said that gambling firms will not be able to advertise through the league’s new jersey sponsorship scheme.

According to ESPN, gambling operators have been black-listed along with alcohol, tobacco, politics, media and competitors of Nike, the league’s exclusive apparel partner, as parties that will not gain access to jersey sponsorship.

Last month, the NBA confirmed that it will permit the sale of jersey sponsorships from the 2017-18 season, as part of a three-year pilot program.

Sponsors’ branding, which will be placed on the front of the jerseys, will not appear on retail versions of the player jerseys, but teams will have the option to sell jerseys with sponsor patches in their own retail outlets.

All 30 franchises in the NBA will be responsible for selling their own jersey sponsorships.
