Nevada’s regulators have ratified William Hill’s launch of seven new sportsbooks and amended sports betting regulations to allow for the possibility of taking wagers from other US states in the future.

Accepting out-of-state sports bets is currently illegal in the US, but the amendment was one of several passed unanimously by the Nevada Gaming Commission in a meeting that focused on modifying definitions of current wagering laws.

The commission also amended the law to allow casinos to accept the last four digits of a social security number instead of the entire number from customers. Social security numbers are requested from customers on-site for tax purposes if they win more than $1,200 from their trip to the casino.

Additionally, the commission clarified definitions for “amateur sport or athletic” events and “virtual” events to cover esports competitions alongside “other events”, which must be approved by the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) chair.

However, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the commission rejected a proposal to allow customers to enrol for sports betting online and insisted that they must still visit a casino at least once in order to sign up.

The amendments were clarified after the commission rubber-stamped initial approvals that had already been granted to William Hill by the NGCB earlier this month.

The operator secured licences for four properties across Las Vegas and Laughlin, as well as sites in North Las Vegas, Reno and in the Stateline region, next to Nevada's border with California.

In Las Vegas, the sites will operate within Golden Entertainment properties. These include race books and sports pools at the Stratosphere Casino, Arizona Charlie’s Boulder and Arizona Charlie’s Decatur, as well as the Aquarius Casino Resort in Laughlin.

The operator has also been granted a new race book and sports pool at the Eldorado Hotel and Casino in Reno and Montbleu in Stateline, both in partnership with Eldorado Resorts, as well as at Jerry’s Nugget Casino in North Las Vegas.

The Eldorado (pictured) licence includes an amendment to orders of registration related to the casino giant’s pending acquisition of a 20% stake in the William Hill US business.

The commission’s meeting yesterday (January 24) was the last for board chairwoman Becky Harris and board member Shawn Reid. Sandra Douglass Morgan will succeed Harris as chairwoman.
