The Rank Group is said to be considering expanding its presence in the UK land-based bingo market by launching a new type of club.

According to the Daily Telegraph newspaper, a Rank Group subsidiary recently registered trademarks for ‘Luda’, ‘Luma’ and ‘Kuda’, which have been cited as possible names for a new brand.

The newspaper said Rank, which already runs the Mecca Bingo brand, is looking to open a number of concept ‘convenience’ sites in the early part of 2017 to test the market, with further launches planned later in the year.

It is believed the new chain of halls would offer a more modern take on the traditional bingo experience. Located in city centres and nightclub-heavy areas, the clubs will be smaller, but more accessible for younger players.

The move comes after Rank and 888 last month opted to pull out of a takeover bid for William Hill.
