The format of the tournament is new, too. The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three matches, with the top two teams from every group plus the eight best third-placed teams advancing to the playoffs. For the first time, the tournament will feature a Round of 32, followed by the familiar road to the final.

The excitement started long before the opening whistle. Four nations have qualified for the tournament for the very first time: Cabo Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan. But the biggest question of the summer remains the same – who will lift the trophy in New York on 19 July.

This time, bookmakers see Portugal as the main favourite. Right behind them are Spain and Germany, who are looking to retain their title. GG.BET experts rate the teams’ chances of winning the tournament as follows:

Portugal may be leading the way, but European and South American elites are right behind them, meaning the race for the trophy is likely to stay open deep into the knockout stage. The road to the final begins on 11 June with the opening match between Mexico and South Africa at the legendary Azteca Stadium – the first stadium in history to host a men’s FIFA World Cup for a third time.
