Gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Macau fell 72.5% year-on-year to MOP7.27bn (£705.1m/€781.4m/$910.5m) in October, but this represented the highest monthly total since January following travel restrictions to the Chinese Special Administrative region being eased in September.

The October total was 228.8% more than the MOP2.21bn recorded in September and the highest figure since January’s GGR of MOP22.13bn, prior to Covid-19 hitting Macau.

October was also the first month since March that the region recorded a year-on-year monthly GGR decline of less than 90%.

Certain travel restrictions have been eased in Macau during recent months, most notably in September when China resumed issuing tourist visas.

Looking at year-to-date, GGR for the nine months to the end of September stood at MOP48.86bn, some 81.4% lower than MOP246.74bn at the same point last year.

In recent weeks, certain major casino operators active in Macau have published their results for the third quarter.

These include MGM Resorts, which said its revenue from Macau fell 93.6% to $46.9m in the three months to the end of September, due to restrictions not being eased until later in the quarter.

Las Vegas Sands also revealed all of its Macau operations saw combined revenue drop by 91.9% to $171m.

SJM Holdings also an 89.6% year-on-year drop in net gaming revenue for its third quarter.
