Newcastle charged over Fun88 logo on youth team shirts
English Premier League football club Newcastle United has been charged after featuring Fun88’s logo on shirts worn by youth team players.
According to the BBC, the English Football Association (FA) said that the offence is in breach of its kit and advertising regulations that state “services and related activities such as alcohol and gambling” cannot be worn by under-18 teams.
In May 2017, Fun88 signed a three-year deal to become the main shirt sponsor of the club, from the 2017-18 season to 2019-20.
The agreement covered both the Newcastle first team and youth squads, but the club in January opted to remove the logo from under-18 players’ shirts after it attracted criticism over showcasing gambling to younger supporters.
Newcastle was named as one of a number of Premier League teams using youth players to promote gambling or betting services on sections of its website aimed at younger fans.
The club now has until March 27 to respond to the FA charge.
