Swedish operators reveal widespread gains in first quarter

Swedish regulator Lotteriinspektionen has announced that all major operators in the country’s regulated market were able to post year-on-year growth during the opening quarter of the year.

Overall turnover in Sweden expanded by 6% to just under SEK4.2 billion (€698 million/$504.1 million).

Swedish market leader Svenska Spel saw revenue increase by 4% in the three-month period to SEK2.3 billion, while Trav och Galopp also saw revenue climb 6% to SEK955 million.

Folkspel, with Bingolotto and Sverigelotten, reported a 17% year-on-year hike in sales to SEK155 million, while Svenska Postkodföreningen saw revenue increase by 5%.

IOGT-NTO, which counts Miljonlotteriet amongst its brands, saw sales increase by 9% in the quarter, while SAP/SSU, which operates the Miljonlotteriet service, experienced a 7% year-on-year jump in sales.

In addition, other national lotteries active in the regulated Swedish market saw sales increase by 20% in the period.

In a statement, the Lotteriinspektionen said: “It is the first time in a long time that all players have shown an increase.

“The Swedish regulated gaming market has in recent years been on a downward trend, but at the end of last year, it turned upward.

“The positive trend looks set to bring further momentum during this year's first quarter.”
