Kambi has expanded its presence in the regulated US sports betting market by agreeing a deal to provide both its online and on-property sportsbook to the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut.

Under the deal, Kambi will first integrate its sportsbook into the Mohegan Sun’s iPro gaming platform to power a free-to-play sports betting product, with a view to extending this to real-money services, subject to market regulation in the state.

Connecticut is yet to legalise sports betting, but a number of bills are currently under consideration in the state as lawmakers push to regulate sports wagering.

Kambi has said the idea behind the free-to-play launch is to help Mohegan Sun patrons familiarise themselves with the sportsbook product ahead of an anticipated real-money roll-out.

“In Mohegan Sun, not only have we partnered with one of the two largest casinos in Connecticut, but also one of the leading gaming and entertainment destinations across the whole of the country,” Kambi CEO Kristian Nylén said.

Established in 1996 by the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, Mohegan Sun is the signature casino and gaming property of Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment (MGE). The 3.5m square foot casino offers a range of land-based casino services, as well as a poker room and three major entertainment venues.

The tribe is one of two operators permitted to operate gambling in Connecticut, alongside the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe. With the two tribes holding exclusive rights to offer gambling in the state, any future sporst betting legislation tmust develop a new compact, or amend the existing deal, to facilitate a statewide roll-out.

“Mohegan Sun's goal is to utilise our brand and strong presence in the state and after a long vetting process, we found that Kambi was best positioned to complement that, as they're the most sophisticated and comprehensive sportsbook out there,” MGE vice president of interactive gaming Aviram Alroy said.

Earlier this month, Mohegan Sun also entered into a strategic partnership with Major League Soccer club New York City FC to offer fans and customers “money-can’t-buy” experiences.

Kambi currently powers a number of other online and land-based sportsbooks in states that have legalised sports betting in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling on PASPA.

Mohegan Sun Pocono racino, the Pennsylvania-based sister property of Mohegan Sun, in January agreed a deal with Kambi to launch online and in-person sports betting, as well as igaming services.

Kambi’s other US clients include DraftKings at Resorts Casino in New Jersey, as well as Rush Street Interactive's Rivers Casino and SugarHouse in Pennsylvania.
