Unibet has agreed a deal to become title sponsor of this year’s inaugural edition of the Professional Darts Corporation’s (PDC) Champions League.

Under the agreement, the new eight-person tournament will now be known as the Unibet Champions League.

Due to take place at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales, from September 24-25, the competition will feature the eight players ranked highest by the PDC after the organisation’s World Matchplay in July.

The eight competing players will be drawn into two groups and the top two from each will go on to compete in the semi-finals and final.

Coverage of the 2016 Champions League will be shown on UK public-service broadcaster the BBC.

“The Unibet Champions League is going to be a real showpiece event this year for the PDC, and the extensive BBC coverage will allow Unibet to reach a large audience of passionate sports fans with our brand,” Unibet UK marketing manager Chris Watson said.

PDC chairman Barry Hearn added: “This unique tournament will be another great showcase for the ever-growing Unibet brand, and we look forward to working with them for this eagerly-awaited championship, which will receive huge national and international exposure through the BBC.”

Unibet has already established a presence within professional darts through its sponsorship of the European Championship and Masters.

The operator has also signed up to become title sponsor of the new World Grand Prix, which will take place for the first time this October.
