South African mobile phone operator Cell C has joined forces with online betting company ClickaBet to launch a new mobile sports wagering service.

Cell C customers are able to register for the offering by purchasing a ClickaBet prepaid debit card Cell C stores.

The debit card works with a mobile wallet and players can transfer funds from the card to their ClickaBet account and begin betting.

Initially, users will only be able to bet on football, rugby and tennis, but plans are in place to introduce more sports over the coming months.

According to the itweb.co.za website, Craig Venter, chief executive of ClickaBet said online sports betting has shown a significant increase in activity over the years in the country.

Venter also said that while other mobile phone operators have launched similar services in Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania, this will be the first of its kind in South Africa.

“Mobility and being able to bet anywhere and at any time is a key differentiator in the sports betting industry, customers are looking for convenience and privacy, which this value-added service offers,” Venter said.

“We aim to be a constructive disruptor in the sports betting space, making it simple, secure, mobile and convenient.”
