Virginia sports betting handle rises 8.2% in April

Consumer spending on sports betting in Virginia increased 8.2% year-on-year in April, while adjusted gross revenue in the state was also higher.

Total handle for the month amounted to $609.7 million, figures from the Virginia Lottery showed. This was ahead of $563.5 million in April 2024 but 11.6% short of $689.7 million in March this year.

Players wagered $603.7 million betting on sports online and a further $6 million at retail sportsbooks.

As for adjusted gross revenue, this hit $56.1 million. The figure beat last year by 2.8% and March by 24.4%, despite the lower handle.

Online betting generated $56.6 million in revenue during April. However, a $473,390 loss from retail wagering in Virginia led to a lower overall total.

Hold-wise, this amounted to 9.2% for the month.

Players get back $546.9 million from sports betting

Consumers in the state were returned a total of $546.9 million from betting on sports during April. This included $6.4 million at retail sportsbooks which, as this exceeded monthly handle, resulted in a loss.

Other, undisclosed deductions amounted to $6.6 million. The Virginia Lottery does not publish information on individual operators active in the state’s legal market.

In terms of tax, sports betting generated $8.5 million in Virginia in April. Of this, $8.3 million went to the General Fund Allocation and $212,945 to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund Allocation.
