Tabcorp found guilty of illegal gambling adverts
Australian firm Tabcorp has today (Friday) been found guilty of running adverts that illegally lured consumers to open new betting accounts.
According to 9News, the adverts were published in a newspaper and online in August of last year, offering punters a series of bonus bets and other rewards as incentives for signing up.
State law in New South Wales makes it illegal for bookmakers to publish adverts that tempt consumers with incentives to gamble or open new accounts.
Tabcorp had denied the charges, but was found guilty on all three counts at the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney.
The Tabcorp case comes after a series of similar prosecutions against a number of other major brands, such as Bet365, Ladbrokes and Unibet.
