Sporting events are finally making a comeback after months of being shut down due to the ongoing novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. But how does this translate into numbers?

Sporting events are finally making a comeback after months of being shut down due to the ongoing novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

One league restarted in mid-May, the German Bundesliga, and sports bettors were happily wagering away again that weekend.

But a few questions remain unanswered. How will this translate into numbers? When will all major leagues go back to normal? And how will the restarting of sports affect the online gaming sector?

No one has the answers just yet, but we can provide a few interesting findings on sports and casino KPIs from May 2020.

Sports KPIs

Average deposit amount
The average deposit amount increased slightly by 3% month-on-month and 9% year-on-year to €37 per player.

Monthly deposits
Monthly deposits for sports bettors decreased by 12% month-on-month, while showing an increase of 10% year-on-year.

As can be seen in the trend line below, in the previous month of April the number of monthly deposits per player was higher, probably due to the relatively small volume of valuable players.

As some sports leagues resumed in May, they may have attracted some of the less valuable players, who typically make lower average monthly deposits.

Monthly revenue per player
The average revenue per active player during May decreased by 10% month-on-month, but increased by 15% year-on-year to €92 per player.

Retention rates
The retention rate for sports bettors increased by a whopping 45% month-on-month but decreased by 4% year-on-year.

Generally, we saw an increase in the retention KPIs compared with the beginning of the pandemic, but retention and new retention rates still didn’t reach the same levels as the same time last year.

Conversion rates
Conversion rates increased by 4% month-on-month and 15% year-on-year.

Casino KPIs

Average deposit amount
The average deposit amount increased by 9% month-on-month and 3% year-on-year to €37.

Monthly deposits per player
The average number of monthly deposits per player during May remained the same month-on-month at 9.2, but this was an increase of 8% year-on-year.

Monthly revenue per player
The average net gaming revenue per active player during May increased by 6% month-on-month and 11% year-on-year.

Retention rates
After two months of an evident decrease in retention rates due to the pandemic, last month we finally saw an increase in retention rates, of 15% month-on-month. However, at 63% this was still a decrease of 3% year-on-year.

Conversion rates
In May conversion rates decreased by 4% month-on-month but increased by 28% year-on-year to 44%.

Mobile bettors ratio
This ratio explains the percentage of players who bet on mobile phones.

We have seen an increasing trend since last year as more gaming operators have started to offer platforms on mobile due to the increased demand.

Though we do see a small decrease of 2% month-on-month, there was a 25% increase year-on-year last month. The mobile bettors ratio now stands at 54%, meaning just over half of all users are playing on the go.
